Sefirot (2002)
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Height:   121.5cm
Width:   45cm
Description:

My interest in Jewish mysticism and Kabbalah has led to a curiosity about the variant meanings and symbolism of the Sefirot. There was resonance for me in each path having a different colour, feeling and passion. Initially, I drew very literal interpretations until I realised that because of their associations with real things, they were unable to render the true meaning of the Sefirot. So with abundant use of colour and free flowing brush strokes I aimed to capture parts of the Sefirot – such a large undertaking that it spilt over into more than one canvas. Even the shape of the canvas was important to me; I wanted it to have almost human proportions, long and tall like a body standing up straight.

Sefirot in the Kabbalah of Judaism, are the ten different emanations of God; the top being the furthest and most central part which is unknowable to humans, the closest, the most immanent is the Shekhinah.
